Can I take the test in English or in my own language?

Short answer: no. Both the citizenship test (Indfødsretsprøven) and the permanent residence test (Medborgerskabsprøven) are only in Danish. But you don't need perfect Danish to pass. You need to recognise the words and facts the questions are built on. Here is how.

The rules on test day

  • All questions and answers are in Danish. There is no version in English, Arabic, Ukrainian, Polish, Turkish or any other language.
  • You can't bring aids: no dictionary, no translation app, no phone and no study material.

If you have a disability or reading difficulty

If you have a physical or psychological impairment, such as dyslexia or poor eyesight, you can apply for special conditions. Examples are extra time, a helper or a technical aid. You apply to your test centre at least 4 weeks before the test. If your impairment is not obvious, you need a statement from a doctor, psychologist or other expert. The statement must be no more than 2 years old, unless it is about a permanent condition such as dyslexia. Special conditions are only for impairments, not for limited Danish.

How much Danish do you need?

The questions are short and use the same words again and again: Folketinget, regeringen, kommunen, valg, grundloven, ligestilling. If you know the key words and the facts behind them, you can answer most questions even if your Danish is basic.

A method that works

  1. Practise with the questions in Danish from day one, the way they look in the real test.
  2. When you don't understand a question, check the translation in your language, then read the Danish again.
  3. Read the explanation, so you learn the fact and not just the answer.
  4. Before the test, practise without translations. Take timed tests in Danish only.

Watch out for translated names

Some answers are names of songs, books, places and institutions. In the test they appear in Danish, so learn them in Danish. For example, H.C. Andersen's fairy tale appears as "Den grimme ælling", never as "The Ugly Duckling".

Practise in Danish, understand in your language

Every question is in Danish, like the real test, with a translation and an explanation in your language when you need it.
