The values questions: get 4 of 5 right

The citizenship test (Indfødsretsprøven) has 45 questions. Five of them are about Danish values, and they have their own rule: you must answer at least 4 of the 5 correctly. A high total score is not enough. If you miss 2 values questions, you fail.

How the rule works

  • You need 36 correct answers out of 45 in total.
  • And at least 4 correct out of the 5 values questions.
  • Both rules must be met. A high total score can't make up for failing the values rule.

Why they catch people out

The values questions are not taken from the official study material, so you can't just read your way to them. They test how Danish society works in practice: what is legal, what is expected and which rights everyone has. Many of the answers feel obvious once you know the Danish rules, but they can differ from what is normal in other countries.

Typical themes

  • Freedom of expression, including criticism of religion and those in power
  • Equality between women and men, at work, in marriage and in the family
  • Children's rights: for example, parents may not hit their children
  • Marriage: both people must say yes freely, and forced marriage is illegal
  • Religion and law: Danish law applies to everyone, whatever their religion
  • Democracy: free elections, accepting the result and peaceful debate
  • Equal treatment, whatever your gender, sexuality or background

How to prepare

  1. Practise values questions until you get them right every time, not just most of the time.
  2. Read the explanation for each one. The reasoning repeats: the individual's rights and the law come first.
  3. In the test, read each values question slowly. Watch out for answers that sound polite but are illegal in Denmark.
